The North Carolina Tar Heels’ promising 3-0 start to the 2024 season gave way to a four-game losing streak, which put the team at 3-4 as they wrap up October.
North Carolina joins the California Golden Bears as the ACC’s only two teams not to win a conference game yet this season.
As such, questions have emerged about the job security of 73-year-old iconic head coach Mack Brown, who is in his sixteenth season over two different stints with the university.
On Wednesday, on The College GameDay Podcast, ESPN’s Pete Thamel questioned Brown’s future with the school.
“They made five straight bowl games, he’s done that place right, but they’re amid a four-game losing streak right now. It just doesn’t seem like there’s a way out for him to be the coach there next year. I don’t know how the end is going to happen quite yet, but I think there’s an expectation in the industry that it does happen at some point,” Thamel said about college football’s oldest active head coach.
After a loss to the James Madison Dukes earlier this season, Brown made comments that seemed like he was contemplating retirement before walking them back early the following week.
Given Brown’s prominence in college football and with North Carolina, the coach will likely be given a chance to ‘retire’ at the end of the offseason rather than be fired.
Brown has gone 283-153-1 as a head coach, with the majority of the games being with North Carolina or the Texas Longhorns. He was also the head coach of the Tulane Green Wave from 1985-87. He won the 2006 BCS National Championship with the Longhorns.
