Former NFL head coach and current Wisconsin Badgers staffer Jack Del Rio has resigned from his post following an arrest over the weekend.
Del Rio was cited for operating a vehicle while intoxicated early Friday morning in Madison, Wisconsin. The 61-year-old was arrested for a first-time OWI and released shortly after.
On Monday, head coach Luke Fickell addressed the situation.
“He’s going to move forward and he’s going to resign and move on. But it’s a tough situation. Decisions that all of us have to be able to take full responsibility for. So that’s what Jack will do, and we’ll continue to move forward,” Fickell said via ESPN.
Del Rio joined Wisconsin’s staff in August as a senior advisor to the head coach. After his ten-year NFL playing career came to an end, his coaching career began in 1997 with the New Orleans Saints. He stayed with the Saints through the 1998 season before becoming the linebackers coach of the Baltimore Ravens from 1999 to 2001.
His first defensive coordinator stop came when he was named the defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers in 2002. After just one season in Carolina, he was named the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars where he spent 2003-2011. He then spent three seasons as the defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos before getting another head coaching stint, this time with the Oakland Raiders.
Del Rio went 93-94 in his 12-year NFL coaching career.
