Penn State hockey star Gavin McKenna has landed himself in hot water.
The 18-year-old, who is the consensus No. 1 pick in this year’s NHL Draft, was arrested and charged with first-degree felony aggravated assault.
If charged and found guilty, McKenna could face up to 20 years in prison and/or a $25,000 fine, the maximum penalty for the crime in the state of Pennsylvania.
The incident occurred on January 31, the same day Penn State faced off against Michigan State at Beaver Stadium, where McKenna registered a goal and two assists in a losing effort.
Following the game, McKenna and the team reportedly headed to Downton State College with friends and family to enjoy the evening where the incident occurred.
It’s not yet known how this will impact Gavin McKenna’s draft stock, but the teams in contention are certainly keeping a close eye on the situation.
The Vancouver Canucks currently sit in last place in the NHL with 42 points, followed by the St. Louis Blues (49 PTS) and the New York Rangers (50 PTS).
A player like McKenna could be franchise-altering for these teams.
A lot is at stake for Gavin McKenna, Penn State hockey, and several NHL franchises.
