The annual pre-draft hit piece came out this week, and it’s a big one.
ππ₯πππππ‘π: Miami star DE Rueben Bain Jr was cited for careless driving after a crash in Miami that left a passenger in a coma in March 2024, per @OllieConnolly
That passenger was a 22-year-old student and died three months later.

The headline that is making the news now is Rueben Bain killing someone, but the context behind the story is important, especially with the NFL draft nearly a week away.
Rueben Bain Jr. was not determined to be under any influence, and witnesses can corroborate this.
The passenger who passed was unfortunately not wearing a seat belt.
NFL teams have known about first incident for a while now. There was also previous civil litigation

The family of the victim in the car accident, Destiny Betts, who succumbed to her injuries, also released a statement wishing Bain well:
I had been in contact with Betts family lawyer. It was their wishes that any story I was working on not be published until after the draft.

While Bain was cited for the accident, charges were later dropped. NFL teams have done their homework and are okay with it. So why is this all coming out now? The internet had thoughts:
You just found out about the Reuben Bain stuff? NFL insiders have known for months. They are so cool that they know stuff that you don’t. That’s what being an insider is all about. Find out stuff the public doesn’t know, and then only tell them once everyone winds up finding out.

Putting this out 2 weeks before the draft is nasty work

By no means am I diminishing the severity of the terrible tragedy, but the wording here reads as if this is recent news to NFL teams. Itβs not. This has been known and vetted for several months. https://t.co/aru7mHUyrS

Ollie has the story here. Teams Iβve spoken with the past two monthsβoutside of oneβhave been satisfied with Bainβs explanation. Most have considered the matter handled. https://t.co/PXVoAMWB7G

I kinda think Bain was going to fall even before this TBH. I think he goes 10-15. https://t.co/QG84Wbeihw

The impact of this story on Rueben Bain’s career won’t be known until at least the first round of the NFL draft.
Will this story make him fall in the draft, or will teams who have done independent investigations ignore the noise?
