It finally happened.
The news of the long-dreaded expansion of the NCAA Tournament finally arrived Tuesday afternoon to a unanimous groan amongst fans and analysts alike.
NEW: The NCAA has begun the final steps to expand the men’s and women’s NCAA Basketball Tournaments to 76 teams, per ESPN🏀https://t.co/dtxKwpTXaf pic.twitter.com/hS04m6PQwl

Starting next season, both the men’s and women’s tournaments will move from a 68-team field to a 76-team field.
The new, expanded tournament will surely water down the most prolific tournament in all of sports, but with money, TV deals, and NIL at the forefront of college athletics, it’s hard to say this comes as a surprise.
It feels like the people who run college sports actually hate college sports

This is how the men’s tournament would’ve looked with the new format in place for this season:
This is what a new “First 12” would look like, based on NCAA seed list, First Four Out, and WAB.
Mid-major AQs get pushed down, and still no room for Belmont, New Mexico, Yale, etc. And Akron, South Florida, McNeese likely would’ve missed w/o autobid: https://t.co/pqXqKc7mJE pic.twitter.com/ZYTPGmLkmV

As for the women’s tournament, expansion makes even less sense. Parity has been an issue in recent seasons, with the 1 seeds and the common suspects dominating the tournament each and every season. The drop-off in talent below the top-10 ranked teams is serious.
Look at UConn’s record, a team that didn’t win the National Championship, in their path to the Final Four:
Expanding the NCAA men’s basketball tournament is objectively awful, but expanding the women’s tournament as well might be even more asinine. pic.twitter.com/OjT7LvFwSZ

The news was met with sadness and anger from the sports world, and it was hard to find ANYTHING positive about the move online:
Everyone knew ncaa tournament expansion to 76 was inevitable. Almost nobody wants it. Those trying to argue its merits are gaslighting you. I’ve written it many times — it’s a lousy development that contributes to the erosion of what makes college sports great.

Everyone: “For the love of God, please just leave March Madness alone — it’s perfect as-is.”

Literally everyone: March Madness is perfect
NCAA: let’s ruin it https://t.co/bEVkgbbNgK

March Madness is another victim of an NCAA cash grab.
