NCAA’s Decision To Expand NCAA Tournament To 76 Teams Faces Swift Backlash

It finally happened.

The news of the long-dreaded expansion of the NCAA Tournament finally arrived Tuesday afternoon to a unanimous groan amongst fans and analysts alike.

 

Starting next season, both the men’s and women’s tournaments will move from a 68-team field to a 76-team field.

The new, expanded tournament will surely water down the most prolific tournament in all of sports, but with money, TV deals, and NIL at the forefront of college athletics, it’s hard to say this comes as a surprise.

This is how the men’s tournament would’ve looked with the new format in place for this season:

As for the women’s tournament, expansion makes even less sense. Parity has been an issue in recent seasons, with the 1 seeds and the common suspects dominating the tournament each and every season. The drop-off in talent below the top-10 ranked teams is serious.
