It might be preseason, but there was an upset in the world of men’s college basketball on Thursday night.

D2 Bowie State, located less than 30 miles from Baltimore, pulled of the season’s first big upset. The D2 squad upset D1 Hampton of the MEAC with a shocking 73-71 victory.

“Bowie State who was picked second-to-last in the CIAA travels down to Hampton and upsets the Pirates in Ivan Thomas’ DI head coaching debut,” the Mid-Major Madness account posted on X.

While a lot was going on in the sports world, Bowie State pulled off some magic. It’s not often that you’ll see a D2-D1 upset, even in the preseason. So Thursday night’s victory was a big one for the program, and one that might cause some reprogramming for Hampton. Fortunately for them, the game doesn’t officially count. Though, there’s plenty of record to say as much.

This was certainly among the most notable preseason upsets of the 21st century in the world of college basketball. Norris Cole and Cleveland State famously toppled Syracuse in the early 2010s.
