If you were a football enthusiast during the 1980s and 1990s, it is likely that you recall numerous players wearing those bulky, oversized shoulder pads.

While these pads certainly contributed to a distinctive aesthetic that many fans cherished, why did they vanish from football?
The large shoulder pads characteristic of football in the 1980s and 1990s were gradually phased out in favor of sleek, form-fitting, and lightweight equipment. This transition was influenced by a shift in player preferences towards maximizing mobility, advances in impact-absorbing materials, and the desire to reduce the amount of fabric and bulk that defenders could grasp.
As the game sped up, players increasingly prioritized speed and agility over bulk and safety, leaving fans to reminisce about the good old days.
What happened to giant shoulder pads?
It’s a simple question. My search for why was a little more complex.
