The Purdue Boilermakers have been one of the Big Ten’s worst teams so far this season, going just 1-4 through their first five games and 0-2 in Big Ten play.

Purdue has a chance to right the ship and pick up a big win over the Illinois Fighting Illini on Saturday in Champaign, but they’ll be without starting quarterback Hudson Card in their attempt.

Brett McMurphy of The Action Network reported Friday that Card will miss the game with an upper-body injury.

According to Gold and Black, Purdue’s On3 site, Card is in concussion protocol.

So far this season, Card has gone 71-for-112 for 738 passing yards and seven touchdowns to four interceptions. His best game of the season came in Purdue’s 49-0 season-opening win over the Indiana State Sycamores, where Card went 24-for-25 for 273 yards and four touchdown passes. The senior quarterback has struggled in Big Ten play.

As McMurphy notes, redshirt freshman Ryan Browne will make his first career start in relief of Card. Browne has completed seven of eleven passes this season for 68 yards. His most extended playing time came last season against the Northwestern Wildcats when he went 12-for-16 for 104 yards and a pair of interceptions in a 25-13 loss.
