Internet Reacts To Brendan Sorsby Leaving Texas Tech

Following all that controversy, Brendan Sorsby is heading to the NFL.

Just a week earlier, a Texas judge granted Sorsby a temporary injunction, overriding his permanent NCAA ban and allowing him to play for the Red Raiders. However, this decision sparked fierce opposition from the sports community, making his position at Texas Tech untenable.

His quick move to the pros comes after a unique eligibility dispute. Sorsby transferred from Cincinnati to Texas Tech before the 2026 season for a large NIL deal. But an NCAA investigation revealed he had placed over 9,000 sports bets totaling $90,000 over four years, including 40 bets on his own team during his freshman year at Indiana.

Sports media, rival fans, and college football analysts harshly criticized Texas Tech, claiming they compromised competitive integrity to retain a star player. Now, with the recent news, the Internet is having a victory lap.

Since he missed the usual January declaration deadline, he will now enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, which uses a blind-bidding system. Teams submit bids with future draft picks; the highest bid wins his rights, and the winning team forfeits a pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.

With Sorsby officially dropping his lawsuit and leaving Lubbock, Texas Tech will assign the starting quarterback role to redshirt sophomore Will Hammond. Hammond, who is presently undergoing rehab for a 2025 ACL tear but is anticipated to be fully cleared for training camp by August.
