Dabo Swinney Clemson football Head Coach Dabo Swinney speaks during a press conference at the Smart Family Media Center in Clemson, S.C. Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Clemson plays University of Georgia at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia Saturday, August 31 at noon.

If it were up to Dabo Swinney, Clemson would play Georgia annually.

The Clemson Tigers and the Georgia Bulldogs open the 2024 college football season this Saturday in Atlanta. The Dawgs and Tigers will play in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in one of the premier matchups of the first weekend.

Swinney waxed poetic about playing the Bulldogs ahead of the high-profile matchup in the south.

“I mean honestly, I wish we played Georgia every year, just because it’d save a lot of money for everybody, especially our fans,” Swinney said via On3.

Even if he’s joking, Swinney is right about how accommodating the matchup is. It’s not far from Clemson to Atlanta or even Athens. They’re two of the top programs in the region, so it would undoubtedly be an attraction. And, in some ways, it would also be an attraction for recruiting.

Led by Cade Klunbik and Carson Beck, Clemson and Georgia expect to both be two of the top programs in the nation this season. Both have College Football Playoff aspirations, with the Bulldogs eying their third National Championship in four seasons. Last year, UGA missed the playoffs after losing to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Southeastern Championship Game.

Georgia hopes to avenge that loss and deflation in the same venue this Saturday. Clemson will likely give them as good a challenge as anyone this season. The Dawgs are littered with talent and will be imposing.
