While the SMU Mustangs don’t seem ready to name a starting quarterback for the entire season, we now know who will be under center for the squad when they open the season against the Nevada Wolf Pack on August 24 as part of Week 0.

The Mustangs will start junior Preston Stone, but sophomore Kevin Jennings will also see action during the game.

Lia Assimakopoulos of the Dallas Morning News had the news first on Tuesday.

The competition between Stone and Jennings has been intense throughout fall camp. While Stone earned the starting nod against Nevada, Jennings also appearing means Rhett Lashlee and the Mustangs will likely be switching off between quarterbacks, which they did to an extent in 2023.

Stone appeared in 12 games for the Mustangs in 2023, taking the bulk of the snaps at quarterback and going 206-for-344 for 3,197 yards. His 28 touchdown passes were also the sixth-most in a single season in school history.

Jennings saw action in six games for the Mustangs in 2023, including a start in the team’s 24-13 Fenway Bowl loss to the Boston College Eagles. Jennings went 61-for-105 for 618 yards and five touchdown passes over the six games.
