The Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball team has been in a strange spot for the past couple of seasons.

Former Wolverines standout Juwan Howard’s five seasons as head coach left much to be desired. While Howard took Michigan to two Sweet 16s and an Elite Eight, the bottom fell out by year five and he finished 8-24, leading to Michigan parting ways with the 2021 Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Michigan wasted no time replacing Howard with Florida Atlantic Owls coach Dusty May. May took the Owls to the Final Four in 2023 and went 126-69 in his six seasons with the school.

May’s task is to restore Michigan to its former glory. Since 2013, the school has made it to the Elite Eight or better four times, including two national championship appearances.

That task was aided Wednesday when 2025’s top international recruit, Oscar Goodman of New Zealand, announced he would commit to May and the Wolverines.

“I chose Michigan because of how Coach May saw me fitting into their play style. I really liked the ‘we do everything for each other’ environment. I’m big on having great team chemistry and could tell all the guys enjoyed being around each other,” Goodman told ESPN.

The 17-year-old burst onto the international radar over the summer with his exceptional play in the FIBA U17 World Cup. He led New Zealand to a fourth-place finish, the country’s best ever. Over the course of the tournament, he averaged 17 points and 6.3 rebounds.

Goodman joins wing Winters Grady as the second player in Michigan’s 2025 class.
