Lane Kiffin’s return to Oxford was highly anticipated for the 2026 college football season but instead turned into a tough homecoming for the ex-Ole Miss coach.
Ole Miss defeated Kiffin and LSU 32-24 on Saturday night, earning bragging rights in a game that was marked by months of buildup, trash talk, and resentment over Kiffin’s departure to Baton Rouge.
The Rebels led by 17 points at halftime before LSU rallied, but quarterback Trinidad Chambliss helped Ole Miss regain control in the fourth quarter. Chambliss finished with 363 passing yards and three touchdowns, delivering one of the most significant performances of his Ole Miss career.

Once the final whistle blew, the celebration in Oxford carried on. Ole Miss fans had spent the whole week mocking Kiffin, including a roast in downtown Oxford and various signs, chants, and taunts aimed at their former coach. After the win, the teasing persisted, with Ole Miss playing “Calling Baton Rouge” over the loudspeakers.

The aftermath also underscored how massive the weekend had become. The Grove was left littered with cans and debris after an enormous crowd descended on Oxford for Kiffin’s return. Workers stayed into the early morning, cleaning up the remnants of the celebration.

For Ole Miss, however, the mess mattered less than the result.
Kiffin left Oxford for LSU after leading the Rebels to a College Football Playoff appearance, leaving lingering anger among parts of the Ole Miss fan base. His first return ended with his new team leaving town with a loss.
The Rebels got the final word on the field, and Oxford made sure Kiffin heard plenty of it afterward.
