It’s the end of an era at the original “Last Chance U.”
Buddy Stephens, the longtime head coach at East Mississippi Community College and one of the biggest stars of Netflix’s hit documentary series, is out after 18 seasons leading the Lions.

Stephens was fired shortly after publicly criticizing EMCC and the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference leadership over changes to the league’s schedule and playoff format. The MACCC increased the regular season from 9 to 10 games and reduced the number of teams qualifying for the conference playoffs from 4 to 2. Stephens was particularly vocal about the changes, questioning the decision-making behind the new format.
The timing of his departure made the situation even more surprising. EMCC opened the 2026 season with a 14-6 victory over Southwest Mississippi, but Stephens was not on the sideline. The school subsequently announced that associate head coach and offensive coordinator Preston Rice would take over as interim head coach.
Stephens became a household name thanks to “Last Chance U,” which featured EMCC during the first two seasons of the Netflix series. His fiery personality made him one of the most memorable coaches in sports television.

Stephens was must-see TV, with unforgettable moments ranging from a confrontation with a referee to destroying a whiteboard and, of course, stuffing his mouth with chewing tobacco.
But beyond the television persona, Stephens built one of the most successful junior college football programs in the country. He won five national championships and nine conference titles during his tenure at EMCC.
Now, one of the most recognizable figures in junior college football is moving on.
