USC’s social media team tried to ride the wave of Christopher Nolan’s new movie. Instead, they became the punchline. The official USC Athletics account on X posted a slick graphic promoting the Trojans’ upcoming football season.

As is common on social media, users promptly highlighted a major flaw.
The image featured the team’s iconic red-plumed helmet alongside bold white text “ODYSSEY,” the date “08.29.26,” and the caption “Our Odyssey begins August 29 ⚔️.”
While it seemed like a smart bit of marketing, there’s a pretty glaring issue that anyone who recalls high school English class will find. Homer’s The Odyssey follows Odysseus, the Greek king who helped defeat Troy.
The war concludes with the Greeks sneaking into Troy inside a hollowed-out wooden horse, before burning the place to the ground. USC’s mascot is on the losing side of this story.
They know the Odyssey is a story about people trying to get home after winning a war against the Trojans, right? https://t.co/9NanD0wXGW
