Mountaineers Fan Goes Viral for Holding Raccoon At Game

This is peak West Virginia.
One Mountaineers fan in a Davy Crockett coonskin cap stood in the stands of Kendrick Family Ballpark with a raccoon skin to put a hex on Cal Poly pitchers in the Super Regionals. It apparently worked, as WVU blew out the Mustangs to their first-ever College World Series.

The unusual scene occurred during Game 2 of the Morgantown Super Regional. With the Mountaineers leading convincingly at 14-1 in the later innings, the broadcast highlighted a spectator seated directly behind home plate, who was holding a large raccoon.

Commentators and spectators swiftly referred to the animal as a “rally raccoon,” regarding it as a fortunate charm to sustain the team’s remarkable offensive performance.

Social media quickly noted that the most distinctly “West Virginia” aspect of the event was the fact that the surrounding crowd completely disregarded the raccoon’s presence, behaving as if holding a raccoon at a baseball game was entirely commonplace.

We can only hope to see the “Rally Raccoon” again at the College World Series in Omaha.
