The college football world went up on Tuesday after news emerged about the NCAA. After a controversial play occurred in the biggest game of the weekend, the NCAA will consider a potential in-season rule change.
The Oregon Ducks defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes in Eugene this weekend. The third-ranked Ducks scored the biggest win of the season over the second-ranked Buckeyes. In doing so, Oregon pulled off a move that exploited a loophole that the NCAA apparently now wants to clean up.
The Ducks trotted out 12 players on one of the game’s final plays. Oregon ate a penalty, but time ticked off the clock, putting Ohio State in a disadvantageous position. They didn’t have to put themselves in that spot to begin with, granted, but that’s the way it went. Ohio State fell 32-31 to Oregon, and the game ended with a last-second play in which Will Howard slid down well ahead of the first-down marker.
Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports wrote, “Unlike the NFL, NCAA rules do not reset the clock to where it was before the snap when a 12-men penalty is assessed, meaning Oregon essentially traded having an extra defensive back on an obvious passing down for a five-yard penalty that burned four seconds off the clock — a savvy move that is now garnering scrutiny.”

NCAA secretary rules editor Steve Shaw told Yahoo that the organization planned to re-evaluate the play and how it’s officiated. While they said they made no errors, it appears they want to amend it now.
