The Cincinnati Bearcats have decided on a starting quarterback.
On Thursday, head coach Scott Satterfield announced to the media that Indiana Hoosiers transfer Brendan Sorsby would be under center when the team opens the season against the Towson Tigers on August 31.
“He has worked hard to learn the offense, and he’s made a lot of plays. I think he has earned the respect of his teammates, which is huge. There are so many little things that go into being the starter, and I think Brendan has handled himself well,” Satterfield told reporters Thursday via ESPN.
Sorsby was Indiana’s starting quarterback last season as a redshirt freshman. He went 135-for-237 for 1,587 yards and 15 touchdowns to five interceptions.
Sorsby beat out Brady Lichtenberg for the job. Lichtenberg backed up Emory Jones for the Bearcats last season and went 19-for-34 for 252 passing yards in seven appearances. Four-star freshman Semaj Jones will serve as the third-stringer.
Satterfield’s first season at Cincinnati led to disappointing results, as the team went just 3-9. In Satterfield’s defense, a first season at any school can be challenging, especially when dealing with the transfer portal and late-stage recruiting. Cincinnati will look to improve this season as they continue to get acclimated to the new Big 12, which will be expanding again this year with the addition of the Arizona Wildcats, Arizona State Sun Devils, Colorado Buffaloes, and Utah Utes.
