The LSU Tigers lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday night. That wasn’t the only dispiriting news to come out of Baton Rouge, either.
Fans became aggrieved during the game and threw projectiles onto the field. As a result, LSU violated several of the SEC’s spectator sportsmanship guidelines.
And because of that, the Tigers have to eat a massive fine and were issued several mandates.
The SEC announced that LSU will incur a fine of $250,000 after the incident this weekend. Additionally, they will “be required to use all available resources … to identify individuals who threw objects onto the playing field or at the opposing team.” They said that those who are found will be prohibited from attending LSU events for the rest of the year.
The conference also recommended that LSU ‘review and update its Athletics Department game management procedures and alcohol availability policies.” They must provide a report to the conference of their plans.
It’s quite a price to pay for this. Of course, the argument can be that the SEC enabled this behavior earlier this year following an incident at the Texas-Georgia game. The frequency at which this is happening now only further fuels that belief.
Nonetheless, LSU will have to eat this one. Bigger issues are on the horizon, as the Tigers have to try and make a serious push the rest of the way if they want to contend for the SEC or the College Football Playoff. Otherwise, it’ll be a disappointing year on the Bayou.
