Legendary college football coach Mack Brown caused a stir this weekend. After North Carolina’s terrible loss to James Madison, in which the Tar Heels fell 70-50, a score that fits more in the Dean Smith Center, Brown was riled up. Rumors emerged that he told the team he was going to retire.

After that buzz surfaced, Brown cleared the air by clarifying his statement. Then, on Monday, Brown expressed disappointment about the situation. He put a lot of the blame on himself for how it was handled.

“I shouldn’t have put that pressure on them,” Brown said via ESPN.com. “So I’m disappointed in me. I love my job, I love these kids, and I love this place. That’s why I hate losing so much.”

Brown is one of college football’s most recognizable head coaches. He coached the Texas Longhorns for the majority of his career. He won big at Texas while he was there, scoring two Big 12 championships and one BCS National Championship in the historic 2005 college football season.

Mack left Texas several years ago and worked at ESPN for a while. Then, North Carolina hired the former coach and he’s brought them some success. But there were likely few singing his praises after their awful defeat on Saturday. As the drama and hullabaloo subsides, Brown and the Tar Heels hope to get back on track.
