Urban Meyer is backing one Big Ten coach this year to win National Coach of the Year: Indiana’s Curt Cignetti.
The Indiana Hoosiers are among the biggest stories of the 2024 college football season. Indiana is 9-0 and enters November with a reasonable flight path to the Big Ten Championship Game. That would be a remarkable feat for the program, which has never registered a 10-win season.
That has led to favorable consideration and momentum for Cignetti to win the National Coach of the Year Award this season. That momentum furthered with Meyer, as he stumped for the IU coach to receive the honor.
“I’ve probably got a bit more insight,” Meyer said regarding what he notices from his experience versus others. “The premier blocking, the goal-line stand, there’s just so many things that I see Indiana do.’
Meyer talked about how spellbinding it is that Indiana is a 14.5-point favorite against the Michigan Wolverines, the reigning National Champions, on The Triple Option. Elsewhere on the show, they went over Coach of the Year candidates. The discussion began with Cignetti, and Meyer didn’t hold back on his feelings.
“So Curt Cignetti is obviously a candidate unless something changes,” Meyer said.
The Hoosiers have a shot at getting to the Big Ten Championship Game. To do it, they’ll have to defeat the Ohio State Buckeyes in a few weeks down in Columbus. At this rate, that stands to be an absolutely fascinating game.
