With just two weeks left to play in college football’s regular season, teams have started to get a jump on the offseason by making coaching changes now and jumpstarting the coaching search process.
This has been on full display in the American Athletic Conference, where three teams parted ways with their coaches between Sunday and Monday.
First, the Temple Owls announced Sunday they had fired Stan Drayton after three seasons. Then, on Monday, the Florida Atlantic Owls announced that they were parting ways with head coach Tom Herman after two seasons.
Finally, the Charlotte 49ers announced Monday that they will be firing head coach Biff Poggi after two seasons.
“I am thankful to Biff Poggi for his leadership and mentorship of our student-athletes over these past two seasons,” Hill said. “No one can question Biff’s passion for helping young people succeed in life, both personally and professionally, but our on-field results have unfortunately fallen short of everyone’s expectations. As we move forward into the next chapter of Charlotte 49er Football, we will be looking for a leader to take our program to the next level as a consistent bowl and championship contender,” Charlotte athletic director Mike Hill said Monday in a statement released by the university.
Poggi was hired before the 2023 season. Before taking the head coaching job at Charlotte, he was an analyst and later an associate head coach with the Michigan Wolverines. Charlotte had matching disappointing three-win seasons under Poggi, bringing his record with the school to 6-16.
Associate head coach Tim Brewster will serve as Charlotte’s interim for the rest of the 2024 season. Brewster was the head coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers from 2007 to 2010 and has served mostly as a tight ends coach around the country since.
