Longtime football coach Tom Herman has met the end of the road again. The Florida Atlantic Owls announced a leadership change on Monday. In doing so, FAU dismissed Herman after nearly two seasons with the program.
FAU announced the decision to part ways with Herman in a release on their official athletics website.
“Florida Atlantic Vice President and Director of Athletics Brian White announced Monday immediate changes in the leadership of the football program with Hagerty Family Head Coach Tom Herman no longer leading the Owls,” they wrote.
The release quoted FAU VP/AD Brian White on the change.
“I extend my appreciation to Tom Herman for his dedication to our university and our student-athletes. I informed Tom of my decision this morning and then met with the staff and team,” White said. “We firmly believe in our ability to win championships and compete for bowl games, and that remains our standard.”
FAU will begin a “national search ” to fill the vacancy, they said. The Owls had been pretty sturdy over the years, but they’ve fallen back to earth since Lane Kiffin’s departure after the 2019 season. Herman and Willie Taggart before him couldn’t maintain the momentum Kiffin had going in place.
After his dismissal, Herman is 60-36 all-time as a head coach. He’s coached for the Owls, Houston Cougars, and most famously the Texas Longhorns.
