The Miami Hurricanes may be in some trouble. Miami lost to Georgia Tech over the weekend to earn their first loss of the season. The previously unbeaten Hurricanes appeared to be close to locking in a bye in the 12-team College Football Playoff. But now armed with a loss, Miami’s chances of making the playoff aren’t as sure as they were going into the weekend. Not when SMU is riding right behind them in the ACC, setting up a potential matchup in the conference championship game.

ESPN’s Paul Finebaum didn’t like what he saw from the Canes this weekend. After Miami’s loss to the Yellow Jackets, Finebaum weighed in on Miami’s current status and whether the loss hurt their CFP chances. On The Matt Barrie Show, Barrie suggested Miami was still “fine” after the loss, and Finebaum had a stronger response.

“They are,” Finebaum said. “What they’re not, in my mind, is a serious contender anymore.”

“They looked really good. Cam Ward, the whole thing. This is who they are,” Finebaum said. “Someone was going to get them. It’s no big deal because they’re still probably going to get to the playoffs. Where it hurts the most is for the ACC. They probably lost a berth yesterday. They’ll get the champion in, but I don’t think they’ll get in anyone else.”

The Hurricanes have few remaining tests on their schedule, but many probably didn’t expect Georgia Tech to pick them off either. November has famously been a cruel month for college football fans. We’ll see if that cruelty persists in Miami.
