The Nebraska Cornhuskers are 5-4 in the 2024 college football season, and still one win away from securing bowl eligibility for the first time since 2016.

Freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola spoke recently about how much it would mean to the fanbase to be able to get back to prominence.

To complete that goal, head coach Matt Rhule and the Cornhuskers made a late-season offensive coordinator change. Second-year OC Marcus Satterfield was replaced Monday by former Houston Cougars and West Virginia Mountaineers head coach Dana Holgorsen.

“This is not about next year. This is about right now. It’s unique, but it’s probably what’s needed. It’s the right thing,” Rhule said via ESPN during Monday’s media availability when asked about the decision.

Last week, Nebraska hired Holgorsen as an offensive consultant, with a role set to grow as the season continued. That role grew to offensive coordinator before the team even played another game, as they’d been amid their bye week when Holgorsen was hired.

Holgorsen brings an impressive offensive track record to Nebraska. Before being named the head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers after the 2010 season, the 53-year-old spent time as offensive coordinator at Texas Tech, Houston, and Oklahoma State. He’s worked with quarterbacks Graham Harrell, Case Keenum, Geno Smith, and others.

Nebraska will look to gain bowl eligibility this Saturday when they head to Pasadena to play the USC Trojans, another team fighting for bowl eligibility.
