The Ole Miss Rebels toppled the Georgia Bulldogs over the weekend. Quite a scene developed at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford after the win. Thousands poured onto the field and started a celebration after storming down the aisleways. Naturally, the Southeastern Conference didn’t let them get away with it.
The SEC fined Ole Miss $250,000 for the field-storming incident. According to a conference release, it’s the program’s second offense. The school also stated that fans stormed the field before the game concluded and were fined an additional $100,000.
“Ole Miss will incur a fine of $250,000 for a second offense of the league’s current access to competition area policy when fans entered the field after the Rebels’ game versus Georgia,” the conference wrote. “In addition, Ole Miss will incur an additional fine of $100,000 due to fans entering the field prior to the end of the Georgia game,” they added.
As stated in the release, SEC policy says schools that incur these fines must pay them to the opposing school while others get funneled into their post-graduate scholarship program.
Naturally, if you’re Ole Miss, this is all worth it in the end. The Rebels scored one of their biggest wins in recent memory over vaunted Georgia. Eating the fine might as well be part of the entire package. It’ll be a night that Oxford won’t ever forget.
