Two months after dismissing previous athletic director Chris Pezman, the Houston Cougars have filled the position.
Eddie Nuñez, who had been the athletic director of the New Mexico Lobos since 2017, was named Houston’s new athletic director Saturday.
Nuñez will be introduced in a press conference on Wednesday, the university announced in a release.
“Eddie Nuñez brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success during a time of great transformation in college athletics. His leadership will be critical as we continue to elevate our athletics programs, enhance the student-athlete experience and build on the tremendous momentum at the University of Houston,” University of Houston president Renu Khator said in the release.
Nuñez played basketball for the Florida Gators from 1996-98 before starting his administration career with Vanderbilt. He also spent 14 years at LSU before taking the New Mexico job.
“Eddie has demonstrated incredible tenacity and leadership during his many years at LSU and as AD at New Mexico. He knows how to manage complex issues and solve problems. He joins a strong Cougars program with great head coaches already in place which will allow him to focus on raising revenue and planning for the future of UH Athletics,” Houston Board of Regents chairman Tilman Fertitta added.
The contract between Houston and Nuñez will last five years.
