The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets got the 2024 college football season out to a thrilling start with their Week Zero 24-21 upset victory over the No. 10 Florida State Seminoles.
Georgia Tech won via a field goal as time expired, but the victory was set up by the Yellow Jackets’ potent rushing attack, as the team racked up 190 yards on the ground against a Seminoles defense that looked lost at times.
During his weekly news conference Wednesday, FSU head coach Mike Norvell explained what went wrong, starting by blaming himself for the lackluster performance.
“It’s sickening that we came up short and I take total responsibility and ownership for that. It’s my job to have the team prepared to go and play to the best of our ability. I don’t believe that was our best,” the coach said via ESPN.
While the loss was frustrating and disappointing, Norvell is optimistic that his team can use it as a learning experience and build upon it for the rest of the season, starting with their Labor Day evening showdown with the Boston College Eagles.
“Everybody is disappointed in coming up short. Nobody ever wants to find yourself in this situation but I believe in the character of the team, I believe in this coaching staff, I believe in the talent and ability that we have, but we got to go play better. It’s my job to make sure that come Monday night our best football shows up,” he told reporters.
