Urban Meyer had high praise for Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward.

Ward and the Hurricanes lit up the Florida Gators in Week 1 of the 2024 college football season. Meyer, a former coach at Florida, came away extremely impressed by Ward and the way he played against the Gators in his Canes debut.

“I’ll tell you what. Cam Ward? That is to me recruit of the year,” Meyer said on the Triple Option show. “I think he instantly transformed. I think he’s that good.”

Ward was heavily pursued out of the transfer portal by several high-profile schools. Florida State and Ohio State were among those who wound up losing out on Ward, who’s instantly become the Hurricanes’ spoils.

Ward and Miami will have elevated expectations this season. The ACC looks wide open now after FSU dropped their first two games of the season. It’s entirely possible, given their favorable schedule, that Miami could well win the conference and represent them in the College Football Playoff. If Ward keeps this up, he’ll almost surely get it done in Miami.

The Hurricanes have waited a long time to return to prominence. With the way things looked in Week 1, they might be on their climb back. If so, college football has plenty to gain from Miami becoming nationally relevant again.
