USC Trojans defensive lineman Bear Alexander decided to redshirt and enter the NCAA Transfer Portal this week. That decision came on the heels of several moves that Alexander has made over the years. It’s sparked a significant discussion around the college football world. But after Thursday, Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley certainly won’t participate in that discussion for now.

Riley has decided not to answer questions about the situation. Trojans writer Ryan Kartje reported the news of Riley’s decision to abstain on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

“Lincoln Riley says he will not take questions about Bear Alexander’s decision to redshirt this season,” Kartje wrote.

While Riley could address the situation involving Alexander, you wonder what’s to gain from commenting on it. When you see what’s transpired at UNLV, staying silent is probably for the best for Riley. He and the Trojans have bigger fish to fry as their first Big Ten season continues on. The Michigan Wolverines defeated USC despite having fewer than 40 passing yards.

USC could use a bounceback in a number of ways. But at least, in this case, Riley won’t be the source of anyone’s anger by smartly staying quiet.
