The Virginia Tech Hokies averted everyone on Friday night despite committing a self-inflicted error.

Virginia Tech trotted out their special teams unit for a field goal. But the Hokies had two players dressed with the same number.

VaTech writer Andy Bitter made the notable observation on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

“Hokies got away with one,” Bitter said. “Cole Nelson was on the field for taht long field goal by John Love,” he added noting that both players wore the same number, the number 17.

Bitter then posted a screenshot of the mistake that Virginia Tech made.

That’s quite a brutal error for a team to commit, and fortunately for them, VaTech avoided being punished for the error. The game has since rolled on.

The Hokies have a three-point edge over the seventh-ranked Miami Hurricanes. Should the Hokies pull the upset off, it would be a massive win and cause a shakeup in the ACC. It’s already an open conference, but if Miami loses one, it could be off to the races.
