The South Carolina Gamecocks fell to 3-3 on the season after a close loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday.

South Carolina had the embattled Tide against the ropes countless times at Bryant-Denny Stadium but couldn’t put Kalen DeBoer’s squad away, with a game-tying two-point conversion attempt resulting in an incompletion with 43 seconds to play. South Carolina even recovered the onside kick, but quarterback LaNorris Sellers threw an interception to clinch the win for Alabama.

The Gamecocks also played well in their 36-33 loss to the LSU Tigers earlier this season. Leading late in the fourth quarter, they gave up a touchdown to fall late.

After Saturday’s loss to Alabama, head coach Shane Beamer took aim at the ‘narrative’ surrounding the Gamecocks, which he feels is unfair.

“People can put lines as what they want, talk about us how they want to talk about us. It’s amazing to me. From Kentucky, the way we performed [winning 31-6], you know, the perception of our team was really, really high. Then we had a crappy performance last Saturday [losing 27-3 to Ole Miss]. All of a sudden, the narrative is we ain’t worth a crap,” said Beamer. “That’s not the case. We had a bad game last week. We played bad, we performed back, we coached bad against Ole Miss. It doesn’t mean we were a bad team,” Beamer said via On3.

Football is a week-to-week game, Beamer said. The Gamecocks’ performance against Alabama is the latest proof of that fact.

“We have a good team that competes their asses off…That’s what we did today. Came up a little bit short. Says we had a bad day last week that we regrouped from because we’ve got a bunch of fighters in that room that love to compete and love to work. I hurt for them. That’s what I told them in the locker room is I hurt for them because we’re sick of this feeling. They work too hard during the week to come in here on Saturdays and feel like that in that locker room across that wall right there,” Beamer added.

The Gamecocks will have a chance to get back over .500 on October 19 when they head to Norman to face the Oklahoma Sooners.
