Michigan has its sights set on five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood. But in an interesting move on Wednesday, a Wolverines quarterback commit decided to walk his commitment back.

As news of Michigan’s apparent pursuit of the top recruit in 2025 has traveled, the program learned that four-star quarterback Carter Smith would decommit from the Wolverines.

On3’s Hayes Fawcett reported the news on Wednesday night.

“The 6’3 190 QB from Fort Myers, FL had been Committed to the Wolverines since November 2023,” Fawcett said.

This situation has a few layers to it. It could be entirely possible that this is going to turn into a dire situation for Michigan. Their quarterback problems this year are well-documented. However, given the news that they are after Underwood, this makes the decommitment interesting. Did he decommit because of that chatter?

Because he knows they’re no longer after him as a priority? Or is it because Underwood is close to committing than we think?

Speculation will likely run rampant now. With Michigan’s issues at QB, and their standing nationally, this could be one of the biggest storylines of the upcoming offseason. LSU currently has Underwood committed, but flipping is just part of the game. So time will ultimately tell to see if this turns into a coup for Michigan. Right now, it appears it might be on the way.

The college football world reacted to the news.
