The Texas A&M Aggies suffered their first SEC loss of the season on Saturday, falling 44-20 to the South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia.
Texas A&M starting running back Le’Veon Moss left the game after just two carries with a lower-body injury. Immediately after the game, head coach Mike Elko was optimistic that Moss had avoided major injury.
However, that changed on Monday. Elko led off his media availability by informing reporters that Moss’ injury would keep the junior running back out for the remainder of the year.
“On the injury front, just so you guys are aware, Le’Veon will be out for the year. So that’ll be something we’ll deal with,” Elko said.
Moss had been A&M’s leading rusher this season, recording 121 carries for 765 yards and 10 touchdowns, tying him for third-most in the SEC.
This is A&M’s second running back injury of the year, as 2023 All-SEC Freshman running back Rueben Owens suffered a leg injury in a summer scrimmage. Owens, who finished the 2023 season with 743 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns, may return but hasn’t started the process yet, Elko noted.
Saturday’s loss was A&M’s first in SEC play, meaning the team is still in a position to potentially head to Atlanta for the SEC Championship. A win there could propel them into the College Football Playoff in Elko’s first season, but first they’ll need to make up for the production that they lose in their leading rusher’s injury.
