All eyes are on the top-ranked Texas Longhorns. No. 1 Texas will play their first Southeastern Conference game this Saturday against Mississippi State. But everyone’s burning question on the Longhorns revolves around the quarterback. Specifically, which quarterback will play? Is it going to be the injured Quinn Ewers? Or the emerging Arch Manning?
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian addressed the media on Thursday and discussed the timeline for this critical decision.
“We’re gonna decide on the quarterback thing tomorrow,” Sarkisian told reporters. “It won’t be a secret.”
Ewers, who led Texas to a College Football Playoff appearance in 2023, injured his oblique in the Longhorns’ Week 3 matchup vs. UTSA. The touted Manning, a prized recruit with a famous last name, replaced Ewers, and Texas didn’t skip a beat. They’ve hummed with Arch under center, making them a very dangerous team.
“We’re not trying to pull the wool over anybody’s eyes. We just wanna give Quinn [Ewers] every opportunity to see if he’s ready to play and what he looks like,” Sarkisian said. “I’d say he’s improved every day. I think Arch [Manning] has had a very good week.”
Sarkisian added encouraging words for third-string quarterback Trey Owens, who he believed had his “best day” of practice Thursday.
We’ll see what decision Texas makes on Friday, and whether we’ll see either Ewers or Manning on the field for their SEC debut.
