Arizona State Sun Devils head coach Kenny Dillingham announced an update on their quarterback situation.

Dillingham said that Sam Leavitt won’t start against Cincinnati following an injury, leaving the door open for Jeff Sims to take the job this week against the Bearcats.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel said, “ASU coach Kenny Dillingham announces that starting QB Sam Leavitt will not start against Cincinnati. He was injured against Utah. Jeff Sims gets the start.”

Sims is a well-traveled quarterback on his third stop in college football. Previously, he played at Georgia Tech of the ACC and the Nebraska Cornhuskers of the Big Ten. He’s now in his third stop at ASU and his third different conference.

The Sun Devils are out to a hot 5-1 start this season. Arizona State’s move to the Big 12 hasn’t affected them greatly yet, as they’re one win away from bowl eligibility. It would be a great step in the right direction for Dillingham and the ASU program to reach a bowl at this stage, and to play competitively in their new conference. Over the years, ASU has had bright years, but mostly it’s been pretty lean.

ASU will play 4-2 Utah this weekend.
