Sam Leavitt will lead the Arizona State Sun Devils in 2024. Head coach Kenny Dillingham named Leavitt the starting quarterback this week. The Sun Devils will begin anew in the Big 12 this coming season.
ASU reporter Chris Karpman reported on Dillingham’s decision on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.
“Sam Leavitt will be ASU’s starting QB to open the season, per sources. This was the expected outcome based on camp performances by Leavitt and Jeff Sims,” Karpman wrote.

Kenny Dillingham should comment on the decision after practice in a half hour. Leavitt and Sims are aware of the decision.

Leavitt arrived to Arizona State after two years at Michigan State. Leavitt competed in four games as a freshman with the Spartans but saw no action on the field as a sophomore. Leavitt is 15 of 23, with 139 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Arizona State joins the new Big 12 this season alongside Arizona, Colorado, and Utah. They’re not expected to compete yet, but after sanctions hit the program a few years ago, Dillingham has ASU poised to challenge soon. They’re on the up and up and the former Oregon offensive coordinator seems to be pushing the right buttons.
Arizona State opens the 2024 college football season on August 31 against Wyoming.
