The Auburn Tigers haven’t had the results they’ve been looking for so far under Hugh Freeze.
Freeze, who is being paid $6.5 million a year, is just 8-12 in his 20 games with the school, and after going 6-7 last year, the Tigers’ 2-5 start to the 2024 season has to be a major concern for the coach and university alike.
While Freeze’s seat likely isn’t hot yet, as Auburn has a top 5 recruiting class for 2025 per 247Sports, this season is looking increasingly more like a lost cause. Auburn would have to win four of its final five games to match last season’s record and qualify for bowl eligibility.
Things seem grim for the Tigers, but quarterback Payton Thorne isn’t giving up, and he doesn’t want his team to give up either.
Earlier this week, Thorne told the media he encouraged his teammates to keep fighting and give their best effort for the remainder of the year.
“For me, it’s a mindset of ‘If you don’t quit and you keep battling through a season like this’ — the season is far from over. We got at least five (games) guaranteed to us. That’s five opportunities to go play football. I believe it’s never for nothing. If you got these opportunities in front of you, whether you’re a guy that might leave after the year, who knows?” Thorne said via On3.
The senior quarterback has struggled this season, going 94-for-158 for 1,414 yards and 11 touchdowns to six interceptions.
Auburn has a chance to get back on track Saturday when they had to Lexington to face the Kentucky Wildcats.
