The Kennesaw State Owls are one of the newest teams in Division I football. 2024’s jump to Conference USA marked the program’s first at the level.
In fact, Kennesaw State has only had a football team since 2015. In that time, they’ve been coached by just one man: Brian Bohannon.
That will no longer be the case, as the school announced on Sunday that Bohannon would be stepping down. The Owls will have a new head coach for the first time in program history.

The decision comes just one day after the Owls fell to 1-8 on the season with a 43-35 double overtime loss to the UTEP Miners.
“Coach Brian Bohannon informed me this morning that he has decided to step down as our head football coach. I want to express my sincere appreciation to Coach Bohannon and his family for their dedication to Kennesaw State University and our football program over the past 11 years. Coach Bohannon led Kennesaw State into the football era, poured his heart and soul into this program, and represented our university with the highest standards of professionalism and character,” Kennesaw State athletic director Milton Overton said Sunday.
Bohannon leaves Kennesaw State with a 72-38 record. He took the team to four FCS playoffs, making the quarterfinals twice.
Co-offensive coordinator Chandler Burks will coach the team for the rest of the season. Burks was Kennesaw State’s quarterback from 2015-18.
