Penn State Penn State wide receiver Trey Wallace checks in with a line judge in the first half of an NCAA football game in Beaver Stadium, Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, in State College, Pa.

The first College Football Playoff rankings came out on Tuesday night. The Oregon Ducks ranked at the top of the list, and the first rankings looked like this week’s AP Poll.

Among the similarities was that Penn State was ranked 6th, while Indiana was ranked 8th. The Nittany Lions lost the biggest game of their season this past weekend against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Despite that loss, while Penn State certainly hadn’t done anything to earn a significant drop, one team has no losses, and the other team has one.

Greg McElroy took issue with Penn State’s status on the Always College Football show on Wednesday.

“The most egregious example of a team that is being completely overvalued is Penn State. Penn State, their best win this year is against Illinois,” McElroy explained. “I mean, Illinois is a good football team. They’re 6-3. You deserve tons of credit for beating a team 6-3, but if that’s your best moment, and your next best win is against a Wisconsin team that has had their doors blown off a couple times, then what are we doing here?”

“Penn State has no business being number six,” he added. McElroy had an issue with some other teams, such as Texas, but Penn State was the one that stood out most to him. Given how things have played out, it wouldn’t be surprising if that opinion was shared elsewhere.
