In the 11 months since news broke of a sign-stealing scandal masterminded by former Michigan Wolverines analyst Connor Stalions, the story has taken dozens of different turns.

Michigan survived the immediate fallout when the Big Ten levied a three-game suspension of then-head coach Jim Harbaugh. In the time since, Harbaugh, along with multiple defensive staff members, left for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers.

The NCAA sent Michigan a formal notice of allegations shortly before the season began, and the school is expected to make its case to the league in 2025.

Despite the NOA, one of the story’s most obscure items remains unsolved. After news of the investigation broke, eagle-eyed social media users noticed someone who looked just like Stalions on the sideline for the Central Michigan Chippewa’s 2023 season-opening game against the Michigan State Spartans. The person appeared to be wearing smart glasses and recording signals.

Immediately, CMU said they were investigating the matter and has been cooperating with the NCAA investigation.

Things were mostly quiet until this week when The Athletic reported that CMU quarterbacks coach Jake Kostner resigned his post in August.

“We can confirm Jake Kostner has separated from the institution. CMU does not comment publicly on personnel matters,” the school said in a statement.

Kostner joined the CMU staff before the 2023 season and coached on the Michigan staff while Stalions was with the team.

It’s unclear who will replacing Kostner for the 3-2 Chippewas.
