If Sherrone Moore and the Michigan Wolverines have learned anything during this trying season, it has to be how important the quarterback position is.
The Wolverines have struggled greatly at the position this season, starting three different quarterbacks en route to their 5-3 record. The three quarterbacks, Alex Orji, Davis Warren, and Jack Tuttle, have combined to go 115-for-185 for 1,044 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
At 130.5 yards per game, Michigan’s passing offense ranks lowest among power conference teams in the nation.
While it seemed possible that four-star 2025 commit Carter Smith could come in and, perhaps, immediately start for the Wolverines next season, that will no longer be the case.
Smith announced Thursday on his X account that he would be de-committing from Michigan and re-opening his recruitment.

“I would like to start by thanking the coaching staff at Michigan for everything they’ve done for me. I would especially like to thank [offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell] for giving me such an incredible opportunity. With that being said, I would like to announce that I have decommitted from the University of Michigan,” his statement read.
Smith will undoubtedly have plenty of interest from teams still seeking a 2025 quarterback, as he re-enters the market with a month to go before National Signing Day and the opening of the transfer portal.
Before committing to Michigan in July 2023, Smith had interest from Penn State, Clemson, and several other schools.
An interesting subplot to Smith’s decommitment involves Michigan’s pursuit of 2025’s top-ranked quarterback and current LSU Tigers commit Bryce Underwood. Reports surfaced earlier this week that the Wolverines are putting together a major NIL deal to try and sway the Detroit native to Ann Arbor.
