The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets just scored a massive recruiting victory over two preeminent college football programs. Elite offensive lineman Josh Petty announced his intentions to commit to Georgia Tech over the vaunted Florida State Seminoles and Ohio State Buckeyes.

Petty, a five-star lineman via On3, announced his decision to commit to the Yellow Jackets on Monday afternoon.

“5-star IOL Josh Petty has committed to Georgia Tech,” On3’s Recruits page wrote on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

Petty’s commitment to the Yellow Jackets is a historic one. According to 247 Sports’ All-Time Recruits list, and their composite service, Petty’s recruit rating ranks second all-time since the website started tracking recruits in 2000. The only recruit rated higher than Petty? A guy by the name of Calvin Johnson. Maybe you’ve heard of him?

Petty is a Georgia native from Roswell and expressed a desire to be a “hometown hero” to On3. Petty’s aspirations could help provide a jolt to the Georgia Tech program, which has been looking to climb back to relevancy. Last season, they rebounded with a 7-6 season in Brent Key’s first full year as head coach after replacing Geoff Collins in 2022. Getting Petty’s commitment is a great start toward forging a new path.

The college football world had much to say about this stunning commitment.
