Hugh Freeze Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze walks off the field after the game as Auburn Tigers take on Oklahoma Sooners at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024. Oklahoma Sooners defeated Auburn Tigers 27-21.

Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers fell flat on their face on Saturday afternoon. Despite holding a lead late, the Tigers saw that lead evaporate against the visiting Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners stole a late victory away from the Tigers, who once again face an uphill climb ahead.

Auburn has had a dispiriting few seasons. Since parting ways with Gus Malzahn, they’ve been downtrodden. The Bryan Harsin hire went nowhere, and the Hugh Freeze hire appears to be going in the exact same direction.

For Freeze, it’s been a really rough go. This extends back further than just his tenure so far at Auburn too.

Podcast host Michael Bratton, “SEC Mike” on X, noted a statistic that highlights a harsh reality that Freeze has to face. He’s simply not been great against the FBS competition he’s faced.

“Hugh Freeze is now 5-13 in his last 18 matchups against FBS competition,” Bratton wrote in a post.

A win percentage of less than 30 percent against FBS teams – not even ranked FBS teams, just FBS teams – simply isn’t going to cut it. Freeze and Auburn have lost two SEC games in a row, putting them in an early 0-2 hole in conference play. It’s not like their schedule is going to get any less difficult either. With the trend they’re on, it seems clear that Freeze needs to right the ship. Otherwise, it can go from bad to worse quickly for Auburn.
