One result may have surprised a few college football fans this past weekend. The Clemson Tigers romped the Appalachian State Mountaineers this past weekend.
The Tigers put up over 700 total yards and 60 points against the Mountaineers, who were no slouch. Ahead of the matchup, AP poll voters gave votes to Appalachian State. So it’s not like Clemson was facing a scrub.
It was a far cry from how the team performed against the Georgia Bulldogs in Week 1. So much so that it caught the eyes of Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt.
Klatt expressed befuddlement on this week’s Joel Klatt Show, specifically over how Clemson dropped points all over Appalachian State but simply couldn’t get it done against Georgia. He marveled over Cade Klubnik and his Player of the Week performance.
“The opening schedule doesn’t look so bad now,” Klatt said, mentioning that Florida State looks less intimidating now. So does North Carolina state.
“I would frame, as we check in here, I would frame this as maybe this is a moment where Klubnik and Garrett Riley and the offense start to turn the corner,” he said. “You can get better.”
Klatt said that maybe we need to reel it in with the Tigers and perhaps reassess their expectations going forward. Given how Miami has played thus far this year, they have a tall task, but we’ll see how it shakes out.
