The 12-team College Football Playoff might invite more teams, but snubs will still be aplenty. In Joel Klatt’s mind, he knows where one might come from.
Ahead of this year, anti-Playoff pundits and contingents believed the Southeastern Conference (and the Big Ten, but mostly the SEC) might get more favor curried their way. In other words, that two- or three-loss teams would be allowed access into the playoff ahead of more deserving teams.
So far, the season has played out, and it’s been fascinating. There are several two-loss SEC teams, a few one-loss teams, and a lot of competition and in-fighting. So, what’s going to happen at the end of the season?
Klatt boldly predicted that a two-loss SEC team would be eliminated from the 2024 College Football Playoff.
“There will be a 10-2 SEC team left out of the Playoff,” he predicted. “That is, deep in my bones, absolutely going to happen this year. So, start preparing for that SEC fans. Because you’re going to be screaming your faces off if and when that happens.”
The expanded playoff has also come with expanded conferences. Funnily, the conference expansion might work against some of these teams. There just haven’t been as many opportunities for some teams, which has left them with pretty thin resumes when you look deeper.
So, if these teams lose? Well, it might make for an awkward selection process.
