Kirby Smart Georgia head coach Kirby Smart on the sideline during the first half of a NCAA college football game against Auburn in Athens, Ga., on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024.

The Georgia Bulldogs defeated the top-ranked Texas Longhorns on Saturday night. After the win, head coach Kirby Smart was really fired up.

So much so that Smart took aim at ESPN.

Apparently, the Georgia head coach wasn’t fond of the way the network perceived the Bulldogs going into the week.

“Kirby Smart after Georgia defeats Texas 30-15 tells ESPN: ‘Your whole network doubted us,'” Smart jabbed via Bruce Feldman. He added, “And the refs tried to rob us with calls in this place.”

The art of motivation is sometimes pretty funny. Any “doubt” that can be cast down on Georgia may have existed, but they’re a Top 5 team. And in the new poll, they rank second, only behind the top-ranked Oregon Ducks.

So it’s a bit manufactured but fiery nonetheless. And it’s hard to really be too upset over it. Whatever motivation tactics were used clearly worked for the Bulldogs, who beat the Longhorns down Saturday night in Austin.

Georgia will be idle this coming week with a well-timed bye. After this week, they will engage in one of college football’s most iconic rivalries. Georgia will play the Florida Gators in Jacksonville on November 2. Then they’ll play Ole Miss and Tennessee, two ranked teams, back-to-back.
