The Miami Hurricanes picked up a huge Week 1 victory over the Florida Gators. The Canes’ impressive victory was one of the biggest statements made thus far this season. Miami’s victory began with an unexpected touchdown. Ninth-year senior Cam McCormick – yes, ninth-year – scored the game’s first touchdown, surprising head coach Mario Cristobal.
Cristobal admitted he was surprised that happened himself while addressing reporters on Monday.
“I don’t think anybody expected that, right. That was the winning ticket in Las Vegas for somebody that Cam was gonna score the first touchdown for the Miami Hurricanes this year,” Cristobal said.
McCormick’s career began at Oregon, where he wound up getting coached by Cristobal for a few seasons. McCormick then transferred to Miami, where he’s continued his lengthy college football career.
Fortunately for him, he succeeded in a big way on Saturday and so did Miami. It’s been a long and winding road, but the Hurricanes are hoping that 2024 is their year. They haven’t hit the highs the program used to, but there’s optimism abound. We’ll see what they do with it.
The ACC is wide open now after preseason favorite Florida State dropped its first two games. Miami is also expected to contend, and with FSU potentially out of the way an ACC title might be on the way after all.
