After the Michigan Wolverines won the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship, the team was expected to take a step back in the 2024-25 season.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers, taking many staff members. Quarterback JJ McCarthy declared for the NFL Draft and was selected by the Minnesota Vikings, and plenty of other players on both sides of the ball either graduated or left for the NFL.

What wasn’t expected was how lost Michigan has looked at the quarterback position. After quarterback Alex Orji seemingly had the fast track on the starting job all spring and summer, it wound up being Davis Warren starting Michigan’s first three games. Orji replaced Warren as starter after Michigan’s narrow win over the Arkansas State Red Wolves.

Now, it seems, another starting quarterback will have his chance to lead the Wolverines this year, as head coach Sherrone Moore announced Monday that sixth-year senior Jack Tuttle would start against the Illinois Fighting Illini.

“I think right now he gives us the best chance to win. We’ll continue to process that as an offense, as a team, but that looks like the direction we’re heading,” Moore said on the weekly Inside Michigan Football radio show.

Tuttle relieved Orji in the first half of Michigan’s 27-17 loss to the Washington Huskies over the weekend after Orji completed just three of his first seven passes for 15 yards. Despite the loss, Tuttle finished 10-for-18 for 98 yards, which is more passing yards than Orji had in any game this season. He also had just one interception, which Warren accomplished just once in his three starts, throwing a combined five more across the other two performances for six interceptions in three games.
