As the college football season approaches, teams have begun to name their starting quarterbacks.
On Thursday, it was Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day’s turn to name his starter heading into the year.
According to The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, Day told reporters that Kansas State transfer Will Howard would be under center to open the season.

Howard’s selection as the starter isn’t surprising. He was competing with Devin Brown, who appeared in six games for the Buckeyes last season as Kyle McCord’s backup, including a start in the Cotton Bowl Classic loss to the Missouri Tigers. Alabama Crimson Tide transfer Julian Sayin also had some buzz around him during the offseason. For now, Sayin will sit behind Howard and Brown.
In four seasons with Kansas State, Howard threw for 5,786 yards and 48 touchdowns to 25 interceptions. 24 of the quarterback’s 48 touchdowns came in the 2023 season, where the Wildcats went 9-4. Howard’s 24 touchdown passes in 2023 tied the school’s single-season record. His 48 career touchdown passes saw him pass Josh Freeman to become Kansas State’s all-time leader in the category.
Ohio State enters the season ranked second in the AP Poll, and will host the Akron Zips on August 21 to open the 2024 season.
